Silicon Valley vs. Middle America

The boom in silicon valley startups and mega success stories over the last decade has created a tremendous abundance of business literature. Literature specifically written for the valley and geared toward entrepreneurs with computer science backgrounds in coding and programming. As an entrepreneur selling a physical hard good (golf balls!) this can be frustrating. 37 signals and The Lean Startup, are just a few examples of the phenomenon I am describing. At their hearts the authors are software geeks who have written tremendously eloquent books on building succesful startups. Their tips and strategies certainly resonate outside of the software community but something is missing. 99% of businesses in America are not startup internet companies.  That is why I am excited about the latest effort by Steve Blank and co-workers to convert the lessons learned from The Lean Startup into a more applicable model for “traditional” american startups. As more info unfolds on this, I will be sure to keep you informed. Here is a brief synopsis of what’s transpired so far;

Lessons Learned

  • Small businesses make up 99.7 percent of U.S. companies
  • “How to write a business plan” is as obsolete for Main Street as it is for Silicon Valley
  • Using the Lean LaunchPad (the business model canvas and Customer Development) are the right tools
  • Small businesses have different end goals and implementation details
  • We can adapt/modify the Lean LaunchPad approach to embrace these goals/details
